How to Play Piano by Ear

Did you know that Amadeus Mozart could play a piano piece after hearing it just once? He also penned his first symphony while eight-years-old. Unfortunately, none of us will ever match the piano-playing skills of legends such as Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liberace, or Billy Joel. But we can still learn to play piano by ear!

This is not to say that playing piano by ear is a cinch. However, it is certainly worthwhile! You may have the pre-conceived notion that achieving this skill is like lifting a grand piano with your pinky finger. Actually, it`s a skill that you can master with some diligence and dedication. And learning to play songs after simply hearing them can not only improve your piano-playing skills, but can also make you a better listener (for piano-playing and in general). Here are some basic steps to make it happen:

STEP 1: Keep your music player close.
Whether you are using an i-pod, mp3-player or 8-track player, place the instrument near your piano. Most of us are no Mozart`s, so we will need to pause and rewind a recording while learning to play piano by ear. Placing the music player nearby will avoid the inconvenience of needing to walk to the other side of the room, to access the music player`s controls. Save your exercising for the gym.

STEP 2: Master the melody.
Before you start actually playing a piece that you have heard, you need to work on the melody. While listening to the music playing, try playing the melody on the piano keys. If this method becomes distracting, then try quietly humming or singing the piece as you listen to it play. To play piano by ear later, it is crucial that you determine the different pitches throughout the song.

STEP 3: Be in harmony with the harmony.
Of course, before playing a piano piece by ear, you need to master not only the melody, but the harmony as well. While listening to the song, focus on the lowest note in every single harmony of the piece. You must do this whether you are listening to Country or Classical music. These lowest notes form the Roots of the piece`s Chord. By determining the Roots, you can then determine the rest of the Chords` construction.

STEP 4: Build a tree of Triads.
After determining the Root of the Chord, you can build Triads atop them. This is the next important objective when you want to play piano by ear. The majority of Chords are one of two types: Major Chords (happy) and Minor Chords (sad).

STEP 5: Introduce Triads to melody.
Finally, you should combine the Triads you created in STEP 4, with the melody of the tune (STEP 2). It is highly unlikely that you will play the piece note-for-note. However, you will have uncovered the essence of the piece`s musical components. So your version will sound close to the original piece!
