Creating the Perfect Piano Method for Practicing

Vince Lombardi, winning coach of the first Super Bowl, once observed that “Perfect practice makes perfect.” In other words, you should not only practice, but also do it flawlessly. Of course, that`s not to say that the amount of time that you practice isn`t important. However, just as valuable is the methods that you use. This is true for any type of practicing that we do, including learning the play the piano. Here are some of the most effective methods to practicing

An effective (yet often overlooked) piano method to improve your skills is to practice daily. Set aside a specific time of the day when you can turn off the TV, turn off your cell phone, and turn onto practicing the piano. When you`ve set aside a specific time of the day for practicing you`ll be less prone to skip your practice sessions.

Before you launch your practice time, make sure to warm up. You can choose from several types of finger exercises available, such as scales and Arpeggios. This will help to limber up your fingers like a runner prepares for a race by doing stretching exercises. Part of your warm-up piano method may even include actually warming up your (cold) hands!

Another helpful tip for practicing is to start playing slowly, and then work your way up to the “correct” speed. This isn`t to say that you should take the outdated piano advice of practicing slowly all of the time! However, when starting out you need to master which notes to play, and the proper fingering to use. After that, you can start “fine-tuning” your practicing.

In regards to your repertoire, there are some important piano method approaches that can maximize the effectiveness of your practices. Make sure to master each piece before moving onto the next one. Use the rule of FIFO: First In, First Out. Since piano pieces for beginners are short, try to learn at least one new piece a week.

Also, make it a point to keep your eyes on the score (music). Yes, it`s tempting when you`re first starting out to keep glancing down at your fingers, to check if you`re tapping the right keys. But it`s the wrong piano method to use. Learn which notes correspond to which keys before you start playing piano pieces. Then you can focus on reading the notes on the paper, instead of focusing on which keys your fingers are playing.

Finally, immediately deal with difficult parts of pieces and mistakes you make! Remember that old habits are hard to break, and the importance of practicing perfectly. If you`re having problems with a certain section of the piece, stop and work on that particular part until you`ve perfected it. Breaking up piano pieces into more manageable “chunks” will help.
