Mistakes That the Piano Beginner Should Avoid

Here`s a new take on an old adage: To err is human, but to err again is tragic. Sure, we all make mistakes. Nobody is perfect, and assuming or pretending that we are, would be a mistake itself. Though it`s cliché, we should learn from our mistakes. This is particularly true when learning a new hobby, such as playing the piano. 1. Treble Clefs and Base Clefs correspond to hands
This idea may seem logical, since the Treble Clef is above the Bass Clef. However, it`s a wrong assumption. Keep in mind that the different Clefs that a piano beginner sees on written music, refer to ranges in pitch, and also make written music more readable. It`s possible to play one or both hands in the different Clefs, and for your hands to crisscross, placing your right hand in the Bass Clef, and your left hand in the Treble Clef!

2. All Sharps and Flats that you play are black keys
Well, it`s true that all black keys are either Sharps or Flats. However, it`s important to keep in mind their technical definitions. A Sharp involves playing a key that is one key to the right on the keyboard. Meanwhile, a Flat involves playing a key that is one key to the left on the keyboard. As a piano beginner you should learn that two sets of adjacent white keys on a piano have no black key between them. Thus, they form their own Sharps and Flats!

3. Misunderstanding the meaning of a tune`s key
It is crucial to remember that the “correct” way to play a piece is somewhat relevant. In other words, by starting on a different note to play a certain song on the piano, you simply change the key of it. By maintaining the original spaces between notes, or intervals, the essence of the song does not change. You can even start a piece by playing a black key first. Try it!

4. Playing exclusively in the key of C-Major
While this error involves you the piano beginner, it usually results from errant instruction. Basically, the key of C-Major isn`t very finger-friendly. That`s because C-Major only involves the white keys. The black keys are shorter and raised, so it`s ideal to play them with your three longer middle fingers. Meanwhile, the thumb and pinky are more practical for the white keys.

5. Keys are not notes and vice versa.
In fact, depressing certain keys will play corresponding pitches. And it is technically these pitches that match up with certain notes. For example, a single key on the piano can represent either the Flat or Sharp of a different note! In fact, difference can exist in how a single Note sounds, based on the context in which you play it.
