Gospel Piano Lessons in Black and White

This type of Gospel music became fully developed during the era of slavery in the United States. The roots of Black Gospel stem primarily from the “spirituals” that Southern slaves sang during the 1700s and 1800s.

This marked the music`s becoming more worldly. By the mid-1900s, Black Gospel took on a form that resembled Rhythm & Blues form. Later in the 1960s, Black Gospel began freeing itself from the setting of traditional churches. Today, some Black Gospel even has a hip hop quality to it.

How about White Gospel? White Gospel, or “Southern Gospel,” is yet another type of gospel music you can learn by taking gospel piano lessons. Gospel was born as a unique genre to the early 1900s. That is when the first professional quartet created for selling songbooks, emerged.

Fans of Gospel Music often refer to it as “quartet music” due to the composition of the group that sings it. The group is comprised of four singers. Pianos, guitars, and banjos accompanied the first Southern Gospel bands.

These groups flourished from the 1920s to the 1950s due to their radio performances and recordings. However, other artists became famous due to their professional relationship with Christina evangelists such as Billy Sunday and Billy Graham.

Just as some Black Gospel has become more contemporary, some White Gospel has as well. For example, Contemporary Christian music has spun off Southern Gospel and sometimes gets airplay on secular radio stations. Meanwhile, styles such as Christian Country and Bluegrass Gospel have developed from Southern Gospel.
