How to Un-Stick Piano Keys Before Beginning Piano Lessons

Remember the Boy Scouts` motto, “Be prepared”? Such advice becomes quite valuable when you`re beginning piano lessons with an old piano. The thrill of learning to play the piano could become hampered by the disappointment of faulty piano keys—such as sticking keys. It`s really difficult to play the notes of a piano piece when you have to loosen up certain keys after pressing them. Fortunately, you can follow some basic steps to “un-stick” the keys.

Step 1: Press down the sticking key and the key that is directly next to it.
While you`re holding them down tightly, place the tip of a flat-edge screwdriver between the two piano keys. It`s crucial that you place the tip exactly in-between the two keys!

Step 2: Wiggle the screwdriver a little between the two piano keys.
Why is this step necessary? Taking this action with both white and black keys will require the keys to move in a direction that they haven`t been accustomed to. Next, you should pull out the screwdriver.

Step 3: Carefully remove any bits that could have gotten stuck around or underneath the keys, and thus cause them to stick.
While this procedure will help to prepare for beginning piano lessons it`s important to proceed with caution to ensure that you don`t damage the piano.

Step 4: Depress the piano key that was originally sticking.
Unfortunately, it`s possible that the key could still be sticking. If that happens, don`t throw up your hands in frustration! Instead, simply repeat the previous steps one additional time. It`s possible that the keys could STILL be sticking after repeating the process all over again.
If the key is still sticking, then what you`ll need to do is to remove any moisture that could exist between the keys or underneath them.

Step 5: Place a thick piece of paper between the keys that are sticking.
It`s important that the paper is relatively thick. First, you`ll need to simply fold a small bit of construction paper or a business card. Then take that piece of paper and place it between the piano keys that are sticking, and the piano`s wood edging. By doing this, the paper should sit between the piano keys and the wood. However, it should also be slightly underneath the piano key`s front edge.

Step 6: Move the folded paper forwards and backwards.
While doing this, you should also jiggle it a little, so the paper removes any dampness or gumminess there.

Step 7: Contact a piano repairman.
If you`re still unable to solve the problem of sticking keys at this juncture, then the best step to take is probably to contact a piano repairman. The reason is that the interior of the piano could be bent or damaged. If that`s the case, then it`s crucial that a trained professional solve the problem.
